Sand smugglers attempt to murder cop in Tamil Nadu

TRICHY: The Karur police on Friday registered a case against four men for attempting to murder a sub-inspector of police who tried to prevent them from escaping with illegally mined river sand.
Sub-inspector Thangavel of the Palaviduthi police station and a home guard were patrolling near Chinthamanipatti on a two-wheeler in the early hours of Friday.
The duo noticed river sand being smuggled on two tractors. Thangavel asked the drivers to stop the tractors. However, the drivers, M Ajay and M Senthil, didn’t stop the tractors. They attempted to murder Thangavel by running the tractors over him, according to police. Thangavel sustained injuries on his hand and leg when a tractor hit him.
Based on a complaint filed by the SI, a case was registered against the tractor drivers and the owners of the vehicles, S Nagappan and L Selvam. They were booked under IPC sections 294(b) (verbal abuse), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 427 (causing damage to property), 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) r/w Section 21 the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
The accused were yet to be arrested.
