GURUGRAM: As the judge pronounced the verdict convicting Mahipal in the murders of ASJ Krishan Kant's wife and son, the former PSO stood alone.
While Mahipal's maternal uncle Ishwar Singh had come all the way from Mahendergarh with his sister Savitri Devi for the judgment, they had to return before it was pronounced to catch the bus back to their village. "We cannot wait, we have to take the bus home," said Singh. He said in the past one and a half years, he had met Mahipal a few times in Bhondsi jail. Every time he enquired about the incident, he said his nephew told him it was 'because of bad times'.
At the time of the incident, Mahipal had been living in the police quarters in Gurugram with his wife Vikash Devi, who used to teach Hindi in Junior DPS Najafgarh, their two children - a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son - and his mother. After the horrific killings in October 2018, he was terminated from service and the family had to vacate the house.
The incident, said Ishwar Singh, 'destroyed' them. Vikash Devi and the children moved to her parents' home in Rewari. "She met him twice in jail," Singh said, adding that she now works with a private school. Mahipal's mother, who is differently abled, also moved to Mahendergarh and lives with her other son.
