Polio shots ‘given twice’, infant dies

Noida: A four-month-old girl died after she was allegedly administered a polio injection twice by a doctor at an anganwadi centre in Sector 5.
The child’s family members have alleged that the baby died fell ill and turned blue about 16 hours after the injection was administered. She died at a local hospital. The family has filed a written complaint with Sector 20 police alleging negligence on part of the doctor. But no FIR was lodged in the case after the family refused to get a post-mortem done.
The child’s parents Pooja and Shanker said they had taken four-month-old Naira to the Sector 5 anganwadi centre around 11 am on Wednesday. The where she was administered the polio vaccine by a female doctor.
“Around 11 am on Thursday, the baby was taken to the anganwandi centre where she was administered the vaccine. It was given to the baby twice. The girl was fine in the beginning but later, around 3 am the next day , the baby’s condition deteriorated and her body turned blue. We took the child to the hospital and she died later in the morning,” Naira’s uncle Amit told TOI. Her family reached Sector 20 police station to file a complaint against the doctor.
DCP (Noida) Sankalp Sharma told TOI that if the family agrees to get postmortem done, the matter would be forwarded to the chief medical officer’s office,” he said.
