PUNE: The civic body has proposed to build a flyover on Karve Road — between Karve Statue and Karishma Society Chowk in a bid to streamline traffic movement.
If and when the project is completed, it would take the number of flyovers on Karve Road to four — including the Karvenagar flyover (near Dahanukar Colony), the Paud Road flyover (lands near SNDT on Karve Road), and the upcoming Nal Stop double-decker flyover.
About Rs10 crore has been allotted in the draft civic budget for the 2020-21 fiscal for the project. Municipal commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad had tabled the draft budget last week before the standing committee of
Pune Municipal Corporation.
Under the proposal, the administration said that Karve Statue Chowk has become a key junction in Kothrud that witnesses a high volume of traffic, especially in the peak hours. The proposed flyover will start at the chowk and land near Karishma Society Chowk.
Civic officials said they have yet to finalize the alignment and other important details. “However, before preparing any concrete plans, we plan to initiate a detailed survey, traffic and feasibility studies to find out the most effective way of executing the project,” a civic official said.
Regular commuters on the road, however, said the civic administration would do well to instead focus on reducing waiting time at the signal.
“Barring a few improvements at the (Karve Statue) chowk, PMC has not done anything substantial to improve vehicular movement,” Karvenagar resident D S Jadhav, said, adding, “Flyover or underpass are workable options if roadwidening is first not possible.”
This is a ‘Y’ shaped junction with smaller lanes to converging on it. Traffic from DP Road in Kothrud and from Warje/Dahanukar Colony converges at the junction before proceeding towards Paud Phata.
At all times of the day, there is a heavy flow of vehicles between Karishma Society Chowk, which is further down Karve Road, and Dahanukar Colony. Apart from privately owned two-wheelers and cars, the road is also extensively used by buses operated by
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML).
With this problem in mind, the standing committee had tabled a proposal for an underpass and a flyover at this junction in the 2017 civic budget. However, the proposal remained on paper, prompting the administration to submit a fresh proposal.
