TIRUPATI: Andhra Pradesh industries minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy rubbished off reports of Kia Motors planning to relocate its manufacturing plant from Andhra Pradesh to the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu as a blatant rumour being spread by vested interests with a malafide intention to disturb the industrial progress of the state.
Following online reports that Kia Motors was in talks with the state of Tamil Nadu trying to explore the possibilities of relocating its 1.1 billion dollars manufacturing plant from Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu, AP industries minister clarified that it had no such plans in the first place.
"After the online reports came to my notice, I spoke to Kia Motors' representatives and they too expressed shock as to how such baseless rumours were being circulated in the online social media platforms in the very first place. Kia motors will be releasing an official statement strongly condemning the reports," the AP industries minister Mekapati Gautham Reddy clarified.
"The state industries department is aggressively promoting Andhra Pradesh as a conducive destination in the country for investments and even in the recently held Defence expo, the state has signed several MoUs," the minister reiterated.
"Reports of the state government not fulfilling the commitment in terms of industrial incentives and problems on account of the state government's 75% reservation for locals in jobs etc are also not true. The state government is committed to fulfill all the obligations extended to Kia motors whether it is with respect to incentives or regards any other aspects," clarified Gautham Reddy.
It was only on December 5, 2019, that Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy inaugurated the manufacturing plant of Kia Motors India factory at Erramanchi village in Anantapur district. This plant was its first in the world's fifth largest car market.
The plant established in 23,000 million square feet has a production capacity of rolling out 3 lakh cars each year. Kia's first "Made in India" product - the Seltos compact SUV was rolled out from the manufacturing facility and Kia motors has plans to launch other new models in the near future.
