PUNE: Angry relatives of a 17-year-old boy vandalized Welfare Hospital at Ashirwad Chowk in Kondhwa Khurd on Wednesday night. They also attacked its staff, including the doctor who runs the hospital, for not issuing a death certificate. The teen had been admitted to the medical facility, but had not died there.
The Kondhwa police on Thursday booked at least five people on charges of rioting and others of the
Indian Penal Code and Maharashtra Medical Service Person and Medical Service Institution (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property).
Inspector Mahadeo Kumbhar from the Kondhwa police said, “Investigations show that the relatives abused the hospital staff and damaged the glass door by pelting stones.”
Investigation officer assistant inspector Sandip Madhale said an FIR has been lodged and the relatives who damaged the hospital will be arrested.
Sadique Khan, the doctor who runs the hospital, told TOI that the patient came to his hospital from another medical facility.
In his FIR, Khan said, the relatives of the teen had admitted him in his hospital on Tuesday around 8.30pm as he was suffering from chest infection and a low platelet count.
The doctor treating the patient on Wednesday around noon did not find any improvement in his condition and advised his parents to take him to another hospital for treatment. The parents got their son discharged at 6.30pm, the FIR read.
According to the FIR, “Around 10.15pm, four to five men walked into the hospital and told me (Khan) that the boy had passed away because I did not provide him proper treatment and attacked me and my staff. They also abused us. They vandalised the main glass door, benches and threw the landline phones on the floor. They ran away after a crowd assembled inside the hospital.”
Khan said the teen was suffering from breathing problems. “We advised his parents to shift him to another hospital because we were not equipped with medical facilities to treat his condition. We learned from the patient’s relatives that the boy was taken to two other hospitals after they took discharge from my hospital. The authorities there refused to admit him. His relatives then said the boy passed away on the way to Sassoon General Hospital.”
Khan said the relatives told him that the parents took the body home as they did not want a postmortem. “The relatives came to me demanding a letter stating the details of his death. I refused on the grounds that he had been admitted to my hospital for a few hours and he had not died here.”
The relatives then vandalised the hospital property on the ground and first floors, Khan said. A mob of over 200 men had assembled inside and outside the hospital, he added.
“We have handed over the CCTV footage to the police. It shows the men responsible for vandalizing the hospital,” Khan said.
Kumbhar said the patient’s body was handed over to his family after the autopsy at the Sassoon hospital and the report is awaited.
The teen’s father told TOI that they were anxious about the boy’s health. “My son passed away because he was not given proper treatment at the Kondhwa hospital. We are not responsible for vandalising the hospital and attacking its staff. We don’t known the vandals. We will decide about any action against the hospital for negligence in providing treatment,” he added.
