Vadodara: A sessions court on Thursday sentenced a 37-year-old labourer to five years imprisonment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Rohit Chauhan was arrested in 2018 for killing his wife Lalli at their home in Kalali.
Lalli’s mother Sharda Ninama, who is a ragpicker, had filed a complaint against Rohit, who had married Lalli nine years ago. They had six children, three boys and three girls. In August 2018, Lalli wasn’t keeping well so Sharda went to see her daughter at her home. When Sharda reached Lalli’s home, Rohit was present along with his two daughters.
He told Sharda that Lalli was sleeping and requested her not to wake her up. But Sharda tried to wake up Lalli who didn’t respond. She then noticed blood flowing out of Lalli’s nose and some injury on her forehead. When Sharda confronted Rohit, he admitted to have had a fight with Lalli following which he smashed her head on the wall. Lalli’s daughters too told Sharda that there was a fight between their parents the previous night.
The court ruled that the accused committed culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment. Rohit has been ordered to pay fine of Rs 10,000 and if he doesn’t pay the fine, he will have to undergo a further one year simple imprisonment. Out of the fine received, Rs 9,000 would be given to Sharda as compensation.
