LUCKNOW: Police on Thursday arrested Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha functionary Ranjeet Bachchan’s second wife and her two aides for plotting the murder of the saffron leader to marry her lover. The shooter, however, is still on the run.
As many as 20 teams scanned CCTV footage near the crime scene and call details of Bachchan’s second wife Smriti Srivastava, who was arrested along with Deependra, with whom she has an extra-marital affair, and Sanjeet Gautam. Police are on the lookout for the shooter, Jitendra, who was also spotted in CCTV foortage. Bachchan was shot near Globe Park on Sunday.
Lucknow police commissioner Sujeet Pandey told reporters, “The call details of Ranjeet were scanned after their phones were recovered. We found Ranjeet kept in touch with Smriti daily. We also checked call details of Ranjeet’s first wife Kalindi and Smriti. Smriti had exchanged calls with a number at odd hours. But no call was made after January 25. We found the number was of Deependra.”
“When Smriti was questioned, she said Deependra was her friend and no call was made after January 25 because he had gone to Mumbai. But, during checking, Deependra’s location was traced to a hotel at Vikasnagar in Lucknow. Rooms had been booked in names of Deependra and Sanjeet from January 28-30. The white car seen following Bachchan in CCTV on way from OCR to Globe Park was also seen parked outside in the hotel footage,” he added.
Deependra, a transporter, broke down when he was picked for questioning. Three cases are pending against him in Vikasnagar police station. “The plan to eliminate Ranjeet was made on January 17 when he slapped Smriti at Sikandarbagh crossing two days before their anniversary,” he said. Ranjeet had duped Smriti by not revealing that he was already married and even took share in her property, Deependra told police.
On January 20, Deependra, his distant cousin Jitendra and driver Sanjeet decided to eliminate Ranjeet. They followed Ranjeet on January 29 and 30, when he went on his regular morning walk. On January 31, Jitendra shot Ranjeet.
Sanjeet drove Deependra’s SUV towards Chiraiya Jheel where he dumped the mobile phones and proceeded to Haidergarh.
ACP Abhay Mishra said Deependra was arrested from the Uttar Pradesh-Madhya Pradesh border, Sanjeet from Mohanlalganj and Smriti from her house in Vikasnagar.
