Punjabi University's Media Centre earns top ranking for MOOCs

Director EMRC, Prof Gurmeet Singh Maan said that two of the MOOCs, including, 'Solid and Hazardous Waste Management' and 'Biostatistics and Mathematical Biology', have been placed at number six and seven respectively in the world ranking.

PATIALA: Punjabi University's Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) has earned the rare distinction of getting bracketed in the list of world's top 10 universities and institutions in developing and uploading Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for the postgraduate programmes.


Director EMRC, Prof Gurmeet Singh Maan said that two of the MOOCs, including, 'Solid and Hazardous Waste Management' and 'Biostatistics and Mathematical Biology', have been placed at number six and seven respectively in the world ranking. The disclosure of the world rankings, based on the worldwide outstanding performance of MOOCs, has been officially made by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Prof VK Garg and Prof Felix Bast from Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, were the resource persons of these courses, while the entire technical and operational support in developing these MOOCs was provided by EMRC producers, Dr Kulpinder Sharma and Tejinder Sharma.


He added that the universities and institutions which have been ranked above the Punjabi University's Media Centre include: Berkeley University of California (The Science of Happiness), Princeton University, USA (Human Odyssey to Political Existentialism), IIM, Bangalore (Strategic Management), The University of Tokyo (Basic Analytical Chemistry) and IBM, USA (AI for Everyone). He added that surprisingly, one course developed by Trinity College, US (Biostatics and Mathematical Biology) and two by Harvard University (Modern Masterpieces of World Literature, and Justice) have been ranked at number eight, nine and ten.


Chandan Kumar, Producer and Manpreet Singh Budhail, JRO at EMRC, Patiala also trained Dr. Tejinderpal Singh and Prof. Ajmer Singh Malik from PU, Chandigarh and KU, Kurukshetra, in providing technical and operational support for developing MOOCs in "Digital Marketing" and "State and Local Governance: Machinery & Processes".
