MUNICH -- BMW will increase its capacity for producing electric drivetrain components at its Dingolfing plant in southern Germany.
BMW builds about 300,000 sedans a year at the factory, its biggest in Europe, including plug-in models. Around 18,000 people work at the plant.
The number of employees in the drivetrain components division will rise to 1,400 from 600 by the end of the year and is slated to grow to 2,000 over the mid-term, BMW said on Thursday..
The factory builds the 3-series, 4-series, 5-series, 7-series and 8-series cars. Starting 2021, the plant will also build the iNext electric crossover. It also produces electric motors and batteries.
Responding to tougher emissions rules and the threat of multi-million euro fines, carmakers are stepping up efforts to sell electric and hybrid cars.
BMW aims for hybrid and electric cars to make up a quarter of new vehicle registrations by 2021.
