Volkswagen Developing Faster Version Of Record-Breaking ID.R

An even faster version of the all-electric VW ID.R racer is being developed by the German marque, dubbed the ‘Evo.’

A report from Autocar says that the design and technical specifications for the new ID.R Evo are still being finalized and that VW is considering making a return to the Nurburgring with the new car. It is claimed that the current ID.R which ran around the Green Hell had its top speed restricted to ensure the battery could last a full lap.

Speaking about the racer, VW motorsport boss Sven Smeets indicated that it will go a step beyond what the ID.R could. “In the past eight months, e-mobility has made such a leap that we can do with an electric competition car that is bigger and better,” he said.

Specifics about the ID.R Evo remain limited, although it is reasonable to assume that it will produce more downforce, deliver more power, and support a battery pack offering improved range. It also remains to be seen if it will be built from the ground-up or instead based around the current ID.R. Either way, it should be fast.

The current VW ID.R has a number of impressive records on its résumé. Most notably, it holds the outright record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the EV record at the Nurburgring, the outright record up the Goodwood hillclimb, and the record up China’s Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road.

The company has already committed to taking the current car to the Sonoma Raceway in California and wants to better its Goodwood record while development of the ID.R Evo is finalized.
