Finally, UT Chandigarh to recruit special educators

CHANDIGARH: After years, the UT education department has moved a step ahead to facilitate children with special needs. The department has finally notified rules for regulating the recruitment of special educators in Chandigarh. The posts were approved last year after a long wait. The UT has no special educators teaching in government schools so far. It will soon start the recruitment process for 97 special educators, confirmed Rubinderjit Singh Brar, director school education.
The department had sent a proposal for creation of 194 posts of special educators to the ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) in 2016. The MHRD approved 97 posts in 2019. At present, there are 25 special educators shuffling between government schools.
Out of the 97 posts, 50 special educators will be trained graduate teachers (TGTs) while 47 junior basic teachers (JBT) level.
For JBT level, the special educator will have to be graduate or its equivalent from a recognizable university and two-year diploma (special education) or its equivalent recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) with at least 50% marks in aggregate and valid registration with RCI. Out of the total 47 posts, 80% will be filled by direct recruitment (through competitive examination), while 20% by deputation. The stay in case of deputation will not be of more than 1 year, according to the rules.
For TGT level, the special educators will have to have be a graduate from a recognized university with at least 50% marks in aggregate and Bachelor of Education degree (special education) recognized by RCI with at least 50% marks in aggregate and valid registration with RCI, or graduation from a recognized university with at least 50% marks in aggregate and Bachelor of Education degree with two-year diploma (special education) or its equivalent recognized with at least 50% marks in aggregate and valid registration with RCI.
If not so, candidate will have to be a graduate from a recognized university with at least 50% marks in aggregate and Bachelor of Education Degree with Post Graduate Professional Diploma (Special Education) or its equivalent recognized by RCI with at least 50% marks in aggregate and valid registration with RCI.
The special educators (TGT) posts will be filled 60% through direct recruitment, 20% through promotion and 20% through deputation. Here as well deputation period will not exceed for more than 1 year.
