NEW DELHI: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Thursday took a jibe at senior Congress leader
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Replying to a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, in the Lok Sabha, PM Modi said, "When I see & hear Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury ji, I congratulate
Kiren Rijiju ji, Adhir ji promotes the 'Fit India Movement' launched by Rijiju ji very well. He also does gymming while delivering his speeches. I thank Adhir ji for promoting this government."
White taking a dig at Chowdhury, the Prime Minister also added, "Country's politics of last 70 years has been such that no Congress leader can be self-sufficient."
The PM's swipe at the Congress leader came after Chowdhury's repeated disruptions since the start of his speech.
As soon as Modi rose to address the Lok Sabha, Congress members began to raise slogans of “Mahatma Gandhi amar rahe (Long live Mahatma Gandhi)”.
While the slogans continued and the PM waited for them to subside, Chowdhury stood up and remarked, “Yeh to abhi trailer hai (this is just the trailer)”. In response, the PM said, “Aapke liye Mahatma Gandhi trailer ho sakte hain, humare liye Gandhi ji zindagi hain (Mahatma Gandhi may be a trailer to you, for us he Gandhi ji is our life).”
Kirren Rijiju is sports minister in the current government. The 'Fit India Movement', launched last year, aims to encourage people to include physical activity and sports in their daily lives.
Chowdhury who is leader in the Lok Sabha has been at the forefront of attacks against the BJP in recent days. Earlier, Chowdhury attacked the government over the NRC and CAA, saying it was a "sinister design" foiled by the people.
On Wednesday he accused BJP members of being "pseudo-nationalists" who carried out an "ideological surgical strike" on Mahatma Gandhi's thoughts. Referring to the words of Gandhi cited in the President's Address about refugees, Chowdhury said the Father of Nation had stated that "if nationalist Muslims also were forced to leave Pakistan, they can live in Hindustan".
Chowdhury also referred to Swami Vivekananda in his speech. BJP members strongly objected to his remarks pertaining to PM Modi but Chowdhury said any person who pitches for the material world was "bhogi" while a person pitching for the spiritual world was a "yogi". We are all bhogis. We are living in a material world," he said.
He also cited Swami Vivekananda as saying 'our motherland was a junction of two great forces - Hinduism and Islam' and `Vedanta brain and Islam body is only hope for India'. BJP members objected to his remarks.
Chowdhury along with other leaders from Congress and some opposition parties later staged a walkout from Lok Sabha demanding the release of National Conference leader
Farooq Abdullah and other Jammu and Kashmir leaders from detention. Abdullah along with several other leaders including
Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti was detained after the government abrogated Article 370 in August last year.
Chowdhury said it was "shocking to note" that for the last six months three former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers, including 84-year-old Farooq Abdullah, have been "languishing in jail illegally". Abdullah is a member of the House.
