Farmers protest in front of food min’s house demanding waiver of debts,

Ludhiana: Farmers led by Kirti Kisan Union’s Ludhiana unit staged a protest on Wednesday against food, civil supplies and consumer affairs minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, outside his home near Kocchar market. The protesters were demanding waiver of their debts. Heavy police force arrived on the occasion and the road outside Ashu’s home remained inaccessible to public due to this protest.
District president of Kirti Kisan Union, Tirlochan Singh said, “It’s been three years now since the Congress party came to power, but till date the promises made by Congress leaders remain unfulfilled. The biggest promise that was made to the farmers of Punjab is the promise to waive off their debts. So far, the loans of only a handful of farmers has been waived off in Punjab while majority of farmers still live with huge debts on their heads. The main motive of organising today’s protest was to wake up the state government from its sleep and ensure that voice of poor farmers is heard. Today, we have submitted our memorandum of demands to minister Ashu and we have been assured from his end that all demands, including waiving off debts, will be taken care of. This is our warning to the state government that in case no concrete steps are taken to waive off debt of every eligible farmer of the state, we will intensify our agitation.”
Other protestors included general secretary of association Sadhu Singh, Balwinder Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Jinder Manuke, Jagroop Singh and Manohar Singh.
