Chennai to host Nagaland festival

The folk dance is performed on the occasion of war and social gathering such as weddings in Nagaland.
CHENNAI: DakshinaChitra Museum will organise various folk dances as part of the Nagaland festival, to be held on its premises in Muttukadu from February 15 to 23.
The artists of the Kuyingpong Culture Society will perform the folk and tribal dances of their tribe, Sangtam.
The folk dance is performed on the occasion of war and social gathering such as weddings in Nagaland. Maku He Ngichi (war dance) is performed by the warriors of the Sangtam tribe, to mark their victory. Sadang Handu is performed and sung by the women to increase confidence in men, by casting away the evil spirits from the village.
Two stalls will be set up on the premises as part of the fest. One stall will set up by Chizami weaves focusing on textiles. They will be selling products like shawls, vests, clothing and bags.
The second stall will be by Runway Nagaland, selling traditional bead jewellery of Nagaland. All the artisans participating in the festival will be doing a live demonstration of the making process of their products.
Chizami Weaves works with around 600 weavers from Chizami and 14 units in Phek district and Kohima town. The project aims at promoting the textile weaving tradition of Naga-women, ensuring a sustainable source of income for the women weavers who are also farmers, and to enhance weavers’ economic, social and cultural rights of women.
Runway Nagaland began as a store to promote local artisans with a vision to promote ‘Made in Nagaland’ products and artisans. It focuses on using age old traditions, techniques and designs. It has set up the accessories manufacturing unit and employed women and youth with the sole motive to pass on the knowledge to younger generations.
