A teenager ripped clumps of hair from a former classmate she hadn't seen in three years during an unprovoked attack at a karaoke night.

Anneeka Jane Cooke was inside Blue Bar, at Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast, when her former fellow Burnside High School student arrived at the venue with her friends on January 8.

The 19-year-old verbally attacked her victim by labelling her a 'f***ing s***' and then latched on to her hair at about 2am, Sunshine Coast Daily reported.

The attack only ended when bystanders intervened and released Cooke's hold on the victim's hair.

Cooke had not seen her victim since they were both in year 10, the Caloundra Magistrates Court was told.

Police Prosecutor Phillip Stephens told the court Cooke's victim doesn't feel safe at her house since the assault as her attacker knows where she lives.

'From her perspective, the attack on her was so aggressive and forceful, she was concerned that she would do it again because she had some kind of grudge,' he said.

'The physical injuries she received on the night were slapping to the face, physical bruising, bald spots on her head where her hair had been pulled, her shoulder was swollen and bruised internally and she had to wear a sling.'

Duty lawyer Greg Lee said Cooke, who has no criminal history, was drunk at the time of the assault.

Cooke intends to continue studying midwifery at university, Mr Lee said.

The 19-year-old pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm on Wednesday.

The attack was described as 'bullying' by Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist.

'You've been able to able to grab hold of the victim's hair, punch her with the same hand multiple times to the back of the head,' Mr Stjernqvist said.

Mr Stjernqvist said Cooke then used her other hand to punch the victim in the head and shoulders multiple times.

The victim required treatment at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Cooke was sentenced to prison for six months, suspended for 12 months.
