Goa budget 2020: Education focus shifts to meet industry needs

PANAJI: Planning to give Goa a private universities act has shown that the state is now seriously considering changing its course to focus on a new kind of economy revolving around an education hub.
Besides this, chief minister Pramod Sawant made it clear in his budget on Thursday that he wants to also focus on closing the gap between education and industry requirement.
“We want to see what is the need at the industry level and what are the areas in which skills need to be imparted. With this in mind, we have decided to start industrial internship programmes. It will help us provide local students with good future and help them to get better employment,” the chief minister said.
With the same objective in mind, Goa College of Architecture will see the introduction of two masters programmes in the new and emerging areas of MArch Urban Design and MArch Sustainable Habitat from the academic year 2020-21.
The state is considering setting up centres to give students information about competitive exams and opportunities like UPSC, Sawant said.
The state has also formed a committee to bring about smooth transition from school education to higher education, the chief minister and education minister said, without explaining the purpose of such a committee.
“To improve the quality of education, we are trying to introduce innovative methods of teaching. We are encouraging a personal connect between teacher and student,” said the chief minister.
