A mother has divulged a little-known secret to prevent your open avocados from going brown in the fridge, and it involves wrapping it in a vegetable.
The New Zealand-based woman was looking for a 'greener' solution than placing the cut up fruit inside a plastic container and was astonished to learn that lettuce leaves were the recyclable option.
'I sort of accidentally discovered that I have been throwing away first class food wrap,' she wrote on Facebook.
'Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make for excellent food wrap. Since they're designed for that purpose in the first place.'

To prove how efficient the trick is the woman shared an image of her green avocado, saying that it had been sliced open a week ago (pictured)

'It was all good for today's breakfast. Incidentally, lettuce leaves even keep bread buns fresh,' she said.
The news came as quite a shock to the Facebook community, who were astounded to hear their humble lettuce leaves had alternative uses than just being the base of a salad.
'Wow this is really awesome,' one woman responded.

'Oh my god who would have known this? I'll have to try it,' said another.
It's a myth that leaving the pit in the avocado will prevent it from browning and you need to keep general air off the avocado flesh as much as possible.
So while a plastic container will work for a few days, the lettuce leaf offers a more sustainable solution, keeping the fruit moist over the course of seven days.
