Noida: The excise department is in the process of re-allocating liquor shops in the district, twice in a row after several years.
While the excise department norms mention that the liquor shops have to be re-allotted every year, it had not been done in Uttar Pradesh for over nine years due to the monopoly of a particular liquor baron in the state. With the end of this market domination, the annual allotment resumed in 2018.
The existing allottees had been given time till February 3 for reapplying, after which the shops that have not been allotted would open for the public. Following the February 3 deadline for renewal of allotted shops, 373 of the total 482 shops have been re-allotted in Gautam Budh Nagar, while the remaining 109 shops will be open for applications from February 8.
“We are asking all the interested groups to fill in their applications and submit them on time. The processing will take about a week, after which the allotment will be done through a draw of lots. Unlike previous years, the entire process is online and transparent now,” said Rakesh Bahadur Singh, district excise officer.
Of the 214 country liquor shops, 212 were eligible for applying again and 182 have been renewed. Of the 115 foreign liquor shops, 100 were eligible and 82 have been renewed. Of the 129 beer shops, 112 were eligible and 98 have been renewed. Meanwhile, of the 23 model shops, 13 were eligible and 10 were renewed.
“Some of the shop owners from last year were not eligible as the department rules mention that licences of only those shops can be renewed that have seen a 20% increase in profit compared to the previous year,” said another excise official.
There are 33 foreign liquor shops, 32 country liquor shops, 31 beer shops and 13 model shops that will be open for application for the public now. People can apply for any of the four categories of shops online from February 8 to 25 and the first lottery will be drawn on March 2. The applicants will need to submit income tax returns, solvency documents, PAN card, Aadhaar card and digital signatures with the application, along with Rs 30,000 processing fee for model shops and Rs 20,000 for all other kinds of shops.
