More than 2,200 teaching aspirants in Tamil Nadu, who were shortlisted for the appointment of teaching staff in government schools, are in fear as the validity of Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) certificate will be expiring this year.
Chennai: As more than 60,000 teaching aspirants in Tamil Nadu have completed Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) and are still dreaming of getting jobs in government schools, over 13,000 candidates inclusive of those 2,200 persons, who already completed their certificate verification couple of years back, could not get appointment orders from School Education Department till this
point of time.
The RTE act said that the validity of TET certificate is only up to 7 years. Before the expiry of the certificate, the teaching aspirants should get appointment in either government or government aided school otherwise, he or she has to appear for TET again and clear it.
A senior official from Tamil Nadu Teachers Recruitment Board (TTRB), which conducts TET exams, told DT Next that non-selected candidates must renew their TET certificate every seven years, in order to keep themselves updated and fit for teaching profession.
He also pointed out that the 2,200 candidates, who are in the waitlist to get teaching jobs in government schools, have appeared for TET in August, 2013. “Therefore, their TET certificates will be expiring this year. Before that they should get appointment or otherwise, they need to appear again and clear it as per the rule,” he said.
As there is no clue when they would get appointment order from the government, a teacher in a private school who cleared the TET in 2013, seeking anonymity said, “I applied for a government teacher job in 2013 after completing TET. After almost seven years, the counselling and certificate verification was conducted recently. However, till there is no intimation from the officials about the appointment.”
The teacher also claimed that it would be very difficult to re-appear for TET as the syllabus of the exam have changed. “It is not my mistake. Why should I appear for TET again just due to the delay from the government side,” he said adding, “Otherwise, government should relax the rule by making permanent validity to the TET certificate.”
A senior official from the School Education Department said that government is taking steps to give the appointment order at the earliest. “Perhaps, the candidates might be getting the call before the starting of the next academic year,” he claimed.
