NAGPUR: The semi-decomposed bodies of a 55-year-old woman and her maternal uncle were found in their flat on the first floor of an apartment on Wednesday in Dattatray Nagar. The bodies were lying in a pool of blood with stab marks on the bodies and ligature marks on the necks.
The deceased have been identified as Manjusha Natekar, 55, and her maternal uncle Ashok Kate, in his 70s. Sakkardara police have registered a case of murder and arrested Manjusha’s husband Jayant from Nagpur railway station within five hours of the incident coming to light.
The reason behind the murder is still unknown, but sources said that family disputes might have led Jayant to kill the duo.
Family members of the deceased told TOI that Manjusha, headmistress at a primary school in Subhedar Layout, used to live with her husband and maternal uncle in the flat. Kate, who was unmarried, had shifted to live with Manjusha after his sister died around one-and-a-half years ago.
Manjusha and Jayant regularly used to get into fights over family issues. On Monday too the couple had got into a fight.
A neighbour told TOI she heard Manjusha screaming for help several times on Monday morning at around 11. “We went to see what was happening but Jayant sent us away, saying it was their household matter. So we went away. They had also kept the TV on, so that no screams could be heard outside. At around 2.30pm on Monday, Jayant locked the door and went away on his two-wheeler. After that we did not heard anything from the house till Wednesday,” the neighbour said.
Sources from the police claimed that Jayant initially strangled Manjusha in the bedroom before stabbing her, and then strangled Kate before stabbing him too.
Since Manjusha did not go to school for two days, the school officials tried calling her. When they did not get any response, they called Manjusha’s brother Rajesh and informed him about her absence.
Rajesh went to Manjusha’s house and found the door locked. He opened the door with a spare key, and found Kate and Manjusha dead, and a stink spreading in the house. He raised an alarm and summoned the neighbours. One of the neighbours informed Sakkardara police. The crime branch cops too reached the spot.
Commissioner of police BK Upadhyay, Additional CP Shashikant Mahavarkar, DCP Chinmay Pandit, and DCP (crime) Gajanan Rajmane also visited the spot. Upadhyay directed cops to nab Jayant as soon as possible and also appointed five teams.
Cops conducted the spot panchanama and sent the bodies to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where the post mortem will be conducted on Thursday.
Cops later nabbed Jayant from the railway station but were yet to officially place him under arrest.
