Mumbai: Fire breaks out at highrise in Malabar Hill

A major fire broke out on the fifth floor of a 10-storeyed residential building in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill on Wednesday evening. A total of 13 people have been rescued safely as search and firefighting operations are still underway. Three firemen were injured and taken to hospital. All are stable.

Two fire engines were pressed into service after the blaze was initially reported at 8:55 pm. Among the eight persons rescued, three are females and five males.

The fire was brought under control around 10.30 pm. According to the officials from Disaster Management Cell, the fire was reported around 7.30pm at 5th floor of 10 storey Las Palma building. However, later it was declared level three as it started spreading and smoke spread on the floors.

A fire official said high wind caused the fire to spread to other flats. “We have rescued 13 people safely from the building with the help of hydraulic ladder. Nobody was injured,”said an official from Fire Brigade. Fire officials had to also face difficulty due to illegally parked vehicles on the access road.
