PATNA: Patna divisional commissioner Sanjay Kumar Agarwal has claimed that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed to construct two foot overbridges (FoB) at strategic locations on NH-30, commonly known as the
New Bypass Road. The stretch of NH-30 between Anisabad and Zero Mile witnesses regular snarls, owing to movement of heavy vehicles throughout the day.
“The New Bypass Road is one of the most crowded roads in the city. We have observed that pedestrians face a lot of difficulties while crossing the road. Keeping their safety in mind, the NHAI will construct two FoBs at the busiest locations on the stretch,” Agarwal told this newspaper.
He added that instructions had also been given for the maintenance of underpasses on the stretch. “There are several underpasses on the stretch that are not being used due to lack of maintenance. Pedestrians will not have any problem in walking on the road once the underpasses are cleaned.”
Agarwal, who is also the managing director of the Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL), claimed that the New Bypass Road was one of the most accident-prone areas in the city.
“According to a survey, this road has been identified as a black spot because several accidents have occurred here. It is under surveillance and many unauthorized cuts have been removed from the road to ensure the safety of people,” he said.
Patna district magistrate Kumar Ravi also issued several instructions on Tuesday to reduce traffic congestion on the New
Bypass Road. He asked the ADM (law and order) to clean the underpasses on NH-30.
With the construction of FoBs and maintenance of the underpasses, residents of localities like Ram Krishna Nagar and Anisabad now hope to get respite from the frequent snarls.
“The movement of vehicles on the New Bypass Road is more dangerous than the traffic snarls. I always avoid commuting on the stretch at night as it is really unsafe,” said Anisabad resident Sakshi Sinha.
“Crossing the New Bypass Road is very risky as there is continuous movement of trucks and buses there. Moreover, the vehicles move at a very high speed. I will be grateful to the authorities if they take measures to ensure pedestrian safety,” said Shivam Trivedi, another resident of Anisabad.
Lately, the state government has taken several measures to provide safe pedestrian movement. The city will soon get foot overbridges at Rupaspur, Rajendra Nagar and in front of Patna zoo and two underpass escalators near Samrat Ashoka International Convention Centre.
