NEW DELHI: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi has asked Bihar to pull up its socks in implementing the Union home ministry’s showpiece
Crime and Criminal Tracking System and Networks (CCTNS) when he reviewed the project last month, as per the minutes of the meeting accessed by ET.
Having achieved just 12% completion, the NDA-ruled Bihar is the worst implementer of the project so far.
“Governments of Bihar, Manipur and Rajasthan should complete data digitisation and migration of old records quickly. Deployment of CCTNS software should be completed in Bihar by March, 2020,” the PM directed at the meeting, as per the minutes. The CCTNS system aims to connect all police stations in the country through an online platform on which all first information reports (FIRs) would be uploaded and be accessible to all.
At the review meeting, the PM also asked the home ministry and the telecom department to coordinate in order to provide “fast, reliable and improved network connectivity required for the scheme under Bharat-Net project”.
The
BharatNet project involves taking broadband connectivity to all panchayats in the country. The PM’s direction to use BharatNet for the CCTNS project means that remote and rural police stations in the country, which could so far not be connected by
BSNL for internet connectivity, could stand to gain. The PM also directed the home ministry to “fully implement this system in all the UTs on priority” and said all states and UTs should share crime and criminal data with the national database to strengthen the scheme.
