Goa to implement CAA

Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in a written reply in the assembly has said that the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 will be implemented in the state.

The question pertaining to CAA was tabled by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.

Sawant also informed in the written reply that the government plans to take up the work of updation of National Population Register (NPR) in the state from April 16, 2020 to May 30, 2020, along with the Population Census 2020-21.

Replying to a question on the measures taken by the government to tackle any law and order situation arising in the state, Sawant said that the police department and district magistrates are keeping a strict vigil to ensure that no law and order problem arises in the state.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Central Act 47 of 2019) is a Central Act and the rules under the Act are made by the government of India, said Sawant.

Regarding the plans to start the work of NPR in the state, Sawant said that as per the guidelines of the Registrar General of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi, the state government plans to undertake the work of updation of NPR in the state from April 16 to May 30, along with the Population Census 2020-21 .i.e. house to house enumerations. The notification in this regard has been is sued, said Sawant. He said that no documents are needed for a resident to include his name in the NPR.

In a reply to another question, Sawant said that the government has not created any infrastructure for undertaking the work of NPR. The exercise of updation of NPR will be taken up simultaneously along with the Population Census 2020-21 and the staff appointed for the population census will carry out the work, he said.
