CHENNAI: Crime Branch-CID sleuths on Wednesday arrested two people, including a policeman, in connection with the TNPSC exam scam. With the arrest of the policeman in the exam scam, the total number of police personnel arrested in the case has reached three.
However, prime suspect Jayakumar is still on the run even as a special team has fanned out to trace him.
A press release from the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch CID said that the agency on Wednesday arrested policeman T Boopathy, an Armed Reserve constable from Chennai. He had allegedly collected a total of Rs 55 lakh from five people who appeared for the 2017 group 2A TNPSC examination and managed to get them jobs with the help of Jayakumar.
Police had also arrested V Karthik, who had paid Rs 9 lakh through Jayakumar and ‘cleared’ the 2017 exam indulging in malpractice to get appointed in the commercial tax department as an assistant.
The CB-CID further noted that policeman Sithandi, who was arrested from Sivaganga on Tuesday, had collected Rs 82.5 lakh from seven job aspirants who cleared the 2017 group 2A examination and were selected for government jobs then. Similarly, he had collected Rs 7.5 lakh each from 15 people and gave it to Jayakumar. Of the 15, only five were selected.
Meanwhile, the CB-CID intensified its hunt for Jayakumar, believed to be a native of Kerala and had settled in Chennai. Police, who believed that he had gone on pilgrimage, have been looking for him in all the neighbouring states. His photograph was circulated across the state borders.
So far, the Tamil Nadu CB-CID has arrested as many as 32 people in connection with two TNPSC examination scams after the authorities found that candidates who wrote the exam from a particular centre scored high ranks.
TNPSC had banned 99 candidates for life from the Group IV exam after it found that they had manipulated answers by using ‘special’ ink. These candidates from across the state had written the exam at Rameswaram and Keelakkarai centres in Ramanathapuram district as per the instructions of the scamsters. The answer sheets of 52 candidates out of the total 99 were manipulated by the gang who shaded correct responses after the scam.
