Vadodara: The first step towards restoration of the Bhukhi stream, otherwise known as the Bhukhi Nullah, began on Wednesday.
The department of environmental studies of M S University in collaboration with the faculty of science student association started the ‘Bhukhi kaans and bank cleaning initiative’ in order to clean up 2.82km of the non-perennial tributary of Vishwamitri river that passes through its main campus.
The current initiative is to beautify the segment flowing through science faculty premises. “There will be many components in the restoration project but solid waste has to be removed first,” said head of the Department of Environmental Studies, Prof Kauresh Vachhrajani.
“With the help of students of our department and the faculty association, we have taken the small step to remove solid waste deposited on the banks of the stretch adjacent to the faculty of science,” he said.
Vachhrajani further said that the next step will involve all other departments and faculties for which awareness has already been created. “Also, all students and teachers can clean any solid waste that is seen deposited on the periphery. The university’s construction department will have to clean the stream,” he said.
Nearly 200 students wearing protective gear took part in the initiative and collected nearly two tractors full of plastic, thermocol sheets, packaging materials and other solid waste.
Around 15 students from the department will analyse the overall biodiversity of the stretch including its plant, microbes, water quality, soil quality and sources of soil and wet waste that is dumped in Bhukhi nullah as part of their dissertation studies.
Once the analysis is completed, with the support of field experts and with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, a plan to upgrade the nullah will be drawn up.
