ULHASNAGAR: Giving major relief to property
tax holders in the city, the
Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (
UMC) on Wednesday launched 'Abhay Yojana' to waive off the penalty (interest) on
property tax arrears with a pending amount up to Rs 1 lakh.
The waivers would be given on penalty from 25 % to up to 100% from February 5 to March 23. The schemes will benefit poor and middle class property holders who are unable to pay their property tax for years.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders have demanded that scheme's benefits should be given to all the property holders in the city.
Sudhakar Deshmukh, commissioner of UMC, while holding press conference said, "If the pending property tax is paid between February 5 and 24, as high as 100% of the penalty amount will be waived off. If it is paid between February 25 to March 7, 75% of the penalty charges will be waived."
Deshmukh further said, "Those who pay between March 8 and March 16, 50% waiver will be given while those who pay between March 17 to 23, 25% waiver will be given on the penalty". The UMC officials said that those having dues of over Rs 1 lakh will have to pay their entire dues and they can also apply for waiver on penalty through proper hearing on reason for delay of payment.
This proposal under 'Abhay Yojana' was on Tuesday approved by UMC commissioner Deshmukh and Mayor Leelabai Aashan. "The scheme will help civic body to increase revenue as well as it will be beneficial for citizens who will get waiver on penalty on their property tax dues," said
Rajesh Vadharya, chairman of standing committee of UMC.
Meanwhile, BJP Corporator Manoj Lassi demanded that civic body should give benefits to all properties holders.
If UMC officials are to be believed, UMC has property tax dues of Rs 487 crore from around 1,77,000 property holders of city of which around Rs 195 crore is only penalty charged on them for delay of payment. The UMC this year have set target to collect property tax of Rs 120 crore.
