NEW DELHI: Extending gains for the third consecutive day, equity indices on Wednesday ended in green with the benchmark
BSE sensex rising 353.28 points or 0.87 per cent to close at 41,142.66.
The broader NSE Nifty reclaimed the 12,000-mark to settle 110.60 points or 0.94 per cent higher at 12,090.25.
Top gainers in the sensex pack include Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, TCS, HDFC, HCL Tech, LT and Reliance, with their stocks up as much as 4.42 per cent. On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti, Power Grid and Asian Paints were the major losers, with their shares down as much as 3.83 per cent.
On NSE, except for Nifty Media, all sub-indices closed in green with Nifty Metal, Realty, Financial Services rising up to 3.12 per cent.
Domestic participants also cheered improving business sentiment after a survey said India's services sector activity surged to a seven-year high in January, driven by sharp increase in new business orders, leading to job creation and business optimism amid favourable market conditions, a monthly IHS Markit survey said.
According to experts, reports of a significant breakthrough in coronavirus treatment research has boosted global stocks.
Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 366.21 crore, while domestic institutional investors purchased shares worth Rs 601.86 crore on Tuesday, data available with stock exchanges showed.
