Allahabad:
Congress Sewa Dal (CSD) chief organiser Lalji Desai raked fresh controversy on Wednesday when he said that it wasn’t easy to decide if Veer Savarkar was indeed brave or not. CSD is one of Indian National Congress’ frontal organisations.
In Allahabad to attend CSD’s training camp at the Magh Mela ground on Wednesday, Desai said, “There were many people who fought a pitched battle against the British during the freedom struggle, but never surrendered before the government.”
“As far as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is concerned, he had sought an apology from the British at least 11 times and nine of those were in written. The evidence of the correspondence is still available.”
He also questioned when high school teachers were being salaries in the range of Rs 7 to 12 during the British rule, why were they paying a monthly pension of Rs 60 to Savarkar.
Slamming Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over their ideologies, Desai said, “Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was responsible for the partition of the country as he was the first person to suggest the two nation-theory.”
He also said that the organisation would soon release a 16–page booklet on Savarkar, which would contain several lesser-known facts about the right-wing leader along with proof.
He also said that the book would be distributed across the city.
