Wife’s suicide: 10-yr rigorous imprisonment for man

Coimbatore: The mahila court on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for abetting the suicide of his wife in 2013.
Police identified him as S Shanmuganandam of Nandha Nagar in Singanallaur. “He had married Sujatha in 2007. Following a quarrel in March 2013, Sujatha left her husband and, along with their child, began to stay with her parents at their house at Gandhi Managar in the city. Shanmuganandam had been forcing her to bring the child to meet his parents. She was frustrated by the constant pestering and was not able to concentrate on her job. On April 26, 2013, Sujatha was waiting at the Nava India bus stop near Peelamedu to catch a bus to her home. Shanmuganandam called her in her mobile phone and again forced her to bring their child. She had a quarrel with him,” a police officer said.
A depressed Sujatha consumed cow dung powder, a poisonous synthetic dye used as a colouring agent, right at the bus stop. Though she was admitted to a private hospital in the area, she passed away on May 2.
Based on her account, the Coimbatore all women police filed a case against Shanmuganandam for abetting Sujatha’s suicide and arrested him.
On Wednesday, mahila court judge J Radhika awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment to Shanmuganandam and also slapped him with a fine of Rs 5,000.
