PATNA: On day 3 of the strike by sanitation workers of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) against the proposed outsourcing of their work, the district administration as well as the civic body swung into action on Wednesday and initiated alternative measures for ensuring removal of garbage and resumption of other civic services in the state capital.
Following a meeting convened by Patna DM Kumar Ravi, garbage removal work started from some of the busy roads in the city, including Boring Road. PMC officials claimed that anti-mosquito fumigation was also started on Wednesday evening.
DM Kumar Ravi issued instructions for the formation of one team in each of the six circles of the PMC — Azaimabad, Bankipore, Kankerbagh, New Capital, Patliputra and Patna City— that will work round- the- clock to clean the garbage strewn on the roads.
Each team comprise permanent Group D staff of PMC, security personnel, police force, videographer, photographers and executive officer of respective circle. The team was formed during a meeting of the Patna DM with officials of PMC at the collectorate.
“Ample security force will be provided to the sanitation workers and PMC can also take help of local police stations as a precautionary measure. Two teams in each circle will work round-the-clock,” the DM said.
The videographer and photographer will record the cleaning work and immediately report to local police stations if any person tried to create hindrance,” the DM said. He added: “Police complaint will be lodged against such people who tried to interfere in cleaning work. Strict action will also be initiated against such people who found littering garbage on road.”
The DM said initially, the workers would remove the dumped garbage from roads and streets with the help of machinery as well as through manual cleaning. “On major routes like Bailey Road, Boring Road, Frazer Road, Gandhi Maidan and Ashok Rajpath, the workers will use the automatic sweeping machines. The collected garbage will be dumped at landfill sites at Bariya Chak,” he said. “The cleaning work has already started at Dak Bunglow (New Capital), Boring road (Patliputra circle) and Ashok Rajpath (Patna City circle) have resumed from Wednesday evening. In couple of days, we will also resume the door- to- door garbage collection from households in all circles,” Ravi added.
On the direction of PMC commissioner Amit Kumar Pandey, six teams were formed for all five circles of the civic body on Wednesday. Each team comprises 50 sanitation workers, police force and seven sanitation equipment, including earth- mover machines. Pandey said three teams would work in day shift, while the other three teams will work in night shift. “Departmental action will be taken against the permanent sanitation employees of civic body, if they fail to resume the work,” he said. The PMC has also asked the daily wage sanitation workers to resume work from February 6. If they continue their protest, then the civic body will be chuck out.
