TRICHY: A 12 feet-long python was rescued from a residential locality in Alampatti village of Manikandam in Trichy district on Tuesday.
The python was rescued by forest department with the help of a volunteer and was later released in Thatchankurichi reserve forest. Indian rock pythons are protected under scheduled – I (Part II) of the wildlife protection Act 1972.
The incident happened on Tuesday night when Alampatti villagers alerted Manikandam police station about the movement of a python in their locality. The information was passed on to forest department, which arrived at the village with snake catching equipment. Honorary district animal welfare officer G Ramakrishnan from animal welfare board of India (AWBI) that carried out the rescue mission said that he had carried five such missions in this locality over the last two years. The villagers said that there is a lake near the village and pythons were often spotted there feeding on fish in the lake. Occasionally, they ventured into the residential areas in search of prey.
The python that weighed 6.5 kg was found in good health.
