KOLKATA: The busy stretch between South City and
Jodhpur Park witnessed a dramatic chase on Wednesday as a rogue auto first drove recklessly, changing lanes and hit a biker, and then fled at top speed when chased by a sergeant. While fleeing, it hit a home guard and managed to travel another 600 metres, crossing EDF Nursing Home, before it was finally stopped by another sergeant.
“It took the combined effort of the Lake police, the Jadavpur police and the Jadavpur traffic guard to arrest the auto driver,” a Lalbazar officer said.
The auto driver, Sk Azizul Rehman, could not produce his licence and said that he was not even supposed to ply in the area as he had permit for the route between
Dharmatala and Park Circus Lohapool. The Lake police later placed Rehman under arrest.
According to senior officers, around 9am, Rehman broke lane rules, trying to speed opposite South City, and hit motorcyclist Nayanjit Guin. The biker fell on the road and sustained injuries on the chest, right hand and right leg. He was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital.
“When sergeant Saptarshi Brahma decided chase Rehman, the latter suddenly swerved left at the Taltala ground crossing close to EDF. A home guard, who tried to intercept him, was hit too. As the news spread over wireless radio, a sergeant with Jadavpur police station, Pushpen Sarkar, saw the auto fleeing and chased it. The Lake police, too, alerted its men. Finally, Sarkar managed to nab Rehman near the Jodhpur Park post office,” an officer said.
