Bhubaneswar: The state government has planned six more projects worth around Rs 900 crore for Puri under the ABADHA scheme as part of its efforts to transform it into a world-class heritage city.
Earlier, the state government had already approved 15 projects worth Rs 2,300 crore under the Augmentation Basic Amenities and Development of Heritage and Architecture (ABADHA) scheme, named after the temple Mahaprasad.
The government had already made an allocation of Rs 730 crore for them in the supplementary budget in November.
“The six new projects are apart from several other projects sanctioned earlier, including the heritage corridor project around the Puri Jagannath Temple. The official announcement of the new projects would be made soon,” said a senior government official.
The new projects include, among others, a street façade improvement project that has been planned to give a heritage look to the structures on the Badadanda (Grand Road). Around 250 crore will be spent on it.
Earlier, the housing and urban development department had asked house owners, mutt authorities, dharmasalas, hotels and commercial establishments to apply a uniform colour on the buildings along the Grand Road.
The state government has also decided to develop the pleasure garden of the Lord located at the Jagannath Ballav Mutt with an investment of Rs 80 crore. According to the Jagannath Temple administration, the mutt supplies flower-ornaments like tilak and jhumpa for Baddasinghara Besha of the Lord.
As the temple city has several spots of heritage significance, the state government has decided to develop the heritage paths with better road connectivity and develop other basic infrastructure. Under the ABADHA project, around Rs 360 crore will be spent on this project.
The sea beach in Puri would soon become a centre of attraction for people visiting the pilgrim town. Plans are afoot to develop the beach front from the Banki Muhan till the Sterling Resorts. “A master plan is being prepared for the beach front development with focus on beautification, greenery, strengthening roads and developing public amenities,” the official said.
Development of resort, wellness centre, exhibition space-cum-interpretation centre, public park, illumination, parking space and handlooms and handicrafts centre will be covered under the beach road development plan. The state government plans to spend around Rs 180 crore on it.
The development of Gundicha temple, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, is also part of the ABADHA project. Around Rs 5 crore will be spent for the purpose.
Similarly, a Gurukul project with an investment of Rs 25 crore will also be taken up under ABADHA scheme to groom young servitors.
The ABADHA projects will be implemented over a period of three years from 2019-20 to 2021-22. Significant allocation is expected for these projects in the forthcoming state budget for 2020-21 fiscal year, the official said.
