Second offence lodged against robbers who tried to run over cops chasing

Two PCR vans were damaged in the 10-km chase on Tuesday
Vadodara: An offence of dacoity was registered in connection with the robbery of betel nuts and dry fruits from a container truck following which a dramatic police chase had taken place on national highway-48 on Tuesday.
The second offence was registered on Wednesday based on the complaint by the driver of the container truck from which the valuables were robbed by around a dozen robbers.
In his complaint, Ramesh Pujar has stated that the robbers broke open the container’s lock and started siphoning off bags of dry fruits and betel nuts when he sleeping in the driver’s cabin after parking the truck in the bay on the highway. The stolen goods have been valued at Rs 8.7 lakh.
The police have already sent a team of cops to a godown in Surat where Pujar had delivered a part of the goods before proceeding towards Ahmedabad on February 3. “Our team will find out the name and details of the men who had unloaded the goods in Surat in case anyone from among them have been involved or passed on the information to the robbers,” said a police official.
Police are also scanning CCTV footage of four toll plazas where the container truck had stopped after entering Gujarat. The dry fruits and betel nuts were dispatched in the container truck from Karnataka. Police said that the truck had stopped at toll plazas in Navsari, Kamrej in Surat, Bharuch and Karjan. “The footage can give us some lead if the robbers were following them or just chanced upon the truck near Jambuva,” the police official said.
The robbers were stopped by a PCR van in the wee hours of Tuesday when they were siphoning off the goods. They, however, managed to flee on seeing the cops but were chased for several kilometres by two PCR vans on the highway. During the chase, the two police vehicles were damaged as the robbers rammed their truck with the two cars and also pelted stones at the cops.
