Thiruvananthapuram: Reiterating the government stand for a
joint fight, including open demonstrations and agitations, by the
LDF and
UDF against the
CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), chief minister
Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the
IUML leaders to persuade the Congress into such a fight “as the secular credentials of the country were at stake”.
Hinting at the “unfortunate stand” taken by the KPCC leadership on such a joint agitation, the CM, while making his concluding remarks during the discussion on the motion of thanks to the governor’s address in the assembly on Wednesday, said the ruling and opposition parties should come together to spread the message among people.
“The IUML, however, seems to have taken a stand favourable for a joint fight. Now, they need to persuade the Congress leadership to shed their party politics and join the fight against CAA,” Vijayan said.
The CM also clarified that a joint electoral fight at the national level against the BJP was not possible now as the Congress had no alternative to the economic policies being implemented by the Modi-led government. “Such an opposition needs not just strength, but also alternative policies. Unless Congress rectifies its economic policies, it cannot be an alternative to the BJP,” he said.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala later told reporters that Vijayan was playing a political game in the name of fighting CAA. “The UDF is not for making any political gains, and will strengthen its fight against the CAA,” he said.
Taking part in the discussions, Chennithala said the LDF government was giving mere promises in the name of Rebuild Kerala Initiative (RKI). “The CM made 13 foreign trips during his tenure and none of it was beneficial for the state,” he pointed out.
The motion of thanks to the governor’s address was later passed by the assembly.
