Surat:
Three persons,
including a woman, suffered burn injuries in a fire that broke out after a 5kg cooking gas cylinder exploded in Vesu areas of the city on Wednesday. Three children aged 8-10 years, escaped without injuries in the incident. Fire officials said that the blast may have occurred because of leakage in the cylinder.
The explosion took place in the house of Pravin Shah (42), who lives with his wife Jyotsna and three children — daughter Sona and two sons Ansu and Sohan in SUDA Awas flat A6 near S D Jain College. Shah, who does tailoring work for a living, lives in a one-room-kitchen flat.
On Wednesday morning, when Jyotsna ignited the gas stove to make tea the 5 kg gas cylinder exploded and fire engulfed the flat instantly.
Shah’s neighbour Vinod Goswami (42) rushed to douse the fire and suffered burn injuries along with Shah and Jyotsna. All three were rushed to New civil Hospital (NCH). The three children miraculously escaped without any injury.
An official from fire department, Maruti Sonwane said, “Shah suffered 40% burns whereas Jyotsna received 20% burn injuries on her body. However, Goswami’s condition was critical as he suffered maximum 80% burns.”
Sonwane said that the explosion could have been because of leakage in the gas cylinder. “Due to winter, family had kept the windows closed and hence the leaked gas could not escape which aggravated the situation,” he added.
