COIMBATORE: SSVM School of Excellence at Uppilipalayam on Monday adopted ward 64 of the city
corporation to keep it clean and tidy.
“The purpose of adopting the ward is to make the surrounding area cleaner and to appreciate, motivate and support the
sanitary workers for the work that they carry out. It is only the corporation workers who carry out the work and our job is to stand with them and make them feel motivated,” trustee of SSVM institutions S Mohandoss said.
“We are planning to conduct periodical review meetings with corporation officials and workers. Issues pertaining to sanitation will be discussed and necessary actions will be taken to rectify them,” he added.
By involving students in the activity, we could turn them into responsible citizens who would keep society in mind while doing an activity, he said. The school has started a Swachh Bharat Club.
Apart from providing safety gears for sanitary workers and push carts, the school has come forward to provide breakfast to workers on regular basis. It has also agreed to send volunteers to educate the public about source segregation of wastes, said R Raveendran, a Swachh Bharat ambassador.
“By doing so, we are not just creating awareness among the public, but also educating the students about solid waste management,” he said, adding that sanitary workers had been facing an issue or other while they do it on their own. The school has also come forward to carry out two mass cleaning activities per week based on the suggestions given by the public, he added.
About a couple of months ago, CRI pumps had adopted ward 28 at Saravanampatty and had distributed safety gears to the sanitary workers and conducted medical camps for them, he said, adding that another educational institution had shown willingness to adopt another ward.
Chief Swachh Bharat ambassador Shanthi Priya Powroji and founder and managing trustee of SSVM Institutions Manimekalai Mohan participated in the inaugural function.
