You can’t have more than two weapons on one license in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: Now, you cannot have more than two licensed weapons. If you have, then you should deposit the additional ones with the area police station or sell them off, said Ludhiana Police on Tuesday.
The licensing unit of Ludhiana commissionerate issued these directions after receiving the notification of department of home affairs and justice, government of India, as per which the licence holders must deposit or surrender the additional weapon(s) in a year.
Assistant commissioner of police (licensing unit) Ranjit Singh said, “There are approximately 15,000 licences on which nearly 17,000 firearms have been issued in Ludhiana commissionerate. Recently, the ministry of home affairs, government of India, had amended the Arms Act, according to which maximum two firearms can be issued on one licence. We are preparing a database to check how many people have more than two firearms on one licence.”
Commissioner of police Rakesh Agarwal said, “Earlier, three weapons could be issued on one licence. But with the amendment in the Arms Act, the limit has been reduced to two. Another change that has been made in the Act is that arms licence will now be renewed after every five years. It was three years before.”
If after a year licence holders do not deposit or sell off the additional weapons, then those arms would be considered illegal. “And, FIRs will be registered against those possessing illegal weapons,” Agarwal added.
On how police will check if licence holders have deposited the additional weapons, Agarwal said. “After the deadline, police will check record of weapons surrendered with police stations and those sold to gunhouses. That record will be tallied with the licensing unit data.”
