NOIDA: The Noida
traffic police have created space for an additional lane on the Delhi-Noida side of
DND by squeezing a portion of a U-turn, hoping to somewhat ease snarls on the busy arterial road.
The decision has been taken keeping in mind the additional traffic load DND has been witnessing ever since the Kalindi
Kunj border was sealed on December 15 in the wake of CAA protests at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh. So, vehicles, which would have ideally taken the
Kalindi Kunj route, are now being diverted to DND. Officers said the DND-Maharani Bagh stretch has been one of the worst-affected in terms of traffic.
After the tweak in arrangement, the U-turn on the Noida-Delhi side, which would earlier lead vehicles to the third lane on the right of the Delhi-Noida carriageway, will now open into a fourth lane. Since the size of the U-turn has been squeezed by placing barriers, it has made available this additional fourth lane, which was already there but not in use.
Officials said the decision was taken on Monday following a survey of master plan 1 road (DND-Sector 12/22/56 intersection) by a two-member team of the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and traffic police.
DCP (traffic) Rajesh S said, “The U-turn space has been squeezed in such a manner that vehicles can easily pass through and the extra space is utilised by commuters travelling from Delhi. This minor change will help commuters who get stuck on the stretch towards Mayur Vihar loop”
At least 50 extra barriers have been placed to ensure those travelling towards Mayur Vihar don’t merge with the traffic moving towards Sector 16. The DCP said the situation would be reviewed again after the Kalindi Kunj route opens.
