Rachappa Hadapad was a socialist and follower of Ram Manohar Lohia
Dharwad: Rachappa Hadapad, a 2018 Rajyotsava awardee who was ailing for some time, died aged 84 at KIMS Hospital here on Tuesday. Rachappa Hadapad was a socialist and follower of Ram Manohar Lohia’s ideology.
He was attracted to socialism after coming in contact with Shanteveri Gopalgowda who was fighting for the landless in the region. At ‘Samata’, his small barbershop at Grass Market in Dharwad, Rachappa used to discuss socialist ideology with his customers. In the 1970s and early 80s, Rachappa used to keep newspapers and literature containing socialist ideologies in his shop. He was associated with Narayan’s movement in the early 70s. During Emergency, he was actively involved in strengthening the movement in this region.
Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha presented him the JH Patel Award in 2011. Later, the organisation made Rachappa its honorary vice-president for three years. Hailing from Hole Hosur in Bailhongal taluk of Belagavi district, Rachappa spent his childhood at Tirlapur in Navalgund taluk of Dharwad district before shifting to Dharwad.
