CHENNAI:
Muttukadu boat house on East Coast Road will have an added attraction soon – a floating restaurant the Tamil Nadu
Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has proposed to start soon. Though several states, including neighbouring Puducherry, have been operating floating restaurants for more than a decade, it will be a first in Tamil Nadu.
Tourism department sources said Mukattudu was chosen for the purpose as necessary infrastructure to operate a floating restaurant --such as a jetty -- was already available. River banks within the core city were not selected as they attract several norms of Coastal Regulation Zone, an official said. Floating restaurants are one of the popular tourism products in the country. Tamil Nadu Tour Travel and Hospitality Association president V K T Balan said Kolkata and Goa are leading destinations in cruise tourism offering a range of activities on floating restaurants. “This is a unique product that can be used both by local residents and tourists. While tourists can relish food over backwaters, locals can organise parties on floating restaurants,” he said.
The seating capacity of floating restaurants ranges between 50 and 300. “This is a very good initiative of TTDC as floating restaurants can be transformed into avenues for promoting MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibition) tourism to conduct conferences on a small scale as well,” he said.
