West Bengal works on traffic management for Bypass Metro points

The Chingrighata crossing will see a surge in traffic once the Metro station starts operation
KOLKATA: The state government is planning a detailed traffic management masterplan for EM Bypass, with special focus on the Chingrighata crossing and other spots where Metro stations are being set up.
A day-long joint survey was conducted by senior officials of KMDA, RVNL, officers of Kolkata traffic police and bridge experts at the Metro construction sites on EM Bypass.
IIT, Kharagpur, has been engaged to prepare a road map for proper traffic dispersal around Chingrighata, the most important crossings on EM Bypass. A Metro station and the proposed flyover will make the crossing busier.
Officials said the main focus of Tuesday’s survey was to check if the Metro pillars were obstructing the EM Bypass carriageway in any way. “The priority are the locations of the Metro pillars being set up on EM Bypass as they occupy considerable space, resulting in traffic congestion. Besides, with the Metro stations slated to start operations soon, there will be a huge surge of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. So, a detailed traffic management plan must be kept ready once the stations start operating,” an official said.
A foot overbridge near Dhapa crossing, a vehicle underpass near Captain bheri and a small flyover from the Chingrighata crossing to Hyatt More have been proposed to deal with the surge. KMDA is also working on a proposal to set up a flyover from Captain bheri to New Town via Chingrighata and Sector V.
A foot overbridge is being constructed at Chingrihata crossing. In future, the existing Chingrighata flyover is likely to be razed.
