Patna: Two cops injured after candidates go on rampage at JP roundabout, four held

The police have arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in the violence.
PATNA: At least two constables were injured when more than 500 candidates pelted stone on police at JP roundabout under Gandhi Maidan police station area in the city on Tuesday demanding CBI inquiry alleging question leak of Bihar police sub-inspector recruitment examination. More than four candidates were arrested from the spot for their alleged involvement in the attack.
The incident took place at around 12pm when candidates marched towards JP roundabout from Bhikhna Pahadi while protesting against the alleged question leak.
The results of the preliminary examination, conducted by Bihar police subordinate selection commission (BPSSC), was declared on January 28. Exams were conducted in two shifts across 495 centres on December 22. At least 5.85 lakh candidates had appeared in the examination. Altogether, 2,446 vacancies of police sub-inspector, sergeant, assistant jail superintendent for direct recruitment and ex-serviceman category are to be filled by commission though the recruitment process.
Gandhi Maidan police station SHO, Sunil Kumar, said all efforts were made to pacify candidates but they didn’t listen.
"They started to forcibly close the shops in the area and marched forward after which water cannon was used to disperse them. They started pelting stone on police personnel in which two constables were injured after which force was used and tear gas shells were lobbed to disperse them,” SHO Kumar said adding four tear gas shells were fired. The SHO said four candidates were arrested for attacking police.
Meanwhile, agitating students continued to allege during protest that questions and their keys were leaked on social media even before examination was held.
One of the students alleged they even went to meet commission officers who assured of action but nothing was done yet. “We demand CBI inquiry for question leak,” the agitating students said.
When asked, the commission’s OSD-cum-spokesperson, Ashok Kumar Prasad, told TOI over phone that no incriminating material had surfaced yet before commission which could support the candidates’ claim.
“One candidate named Dilip Kumar along with others had met us with a piece of paper claiming that it was part of the leaked questions. However, that was not true. They were convinced and returned. We are looking into the involvement of touts or coaching institutes in instigating the candidates,” he said adding none of the district magistrates across the state informed the commission about any question leak.
He said result of 50,072 candidates for preliminary examination was declared. “Commission provided clear data of disqualified student and reason behind it. We had lodged 10 FIRs across state where OMR sheet or questions were uploaded on social media,” he said and added mostly failed candidates are involved in protests
Prasad said commission is now preparing for conducting main examination either in last week of April or first week of May after which physical efficiency test would be held.
