Do the pre-boards enhance students’ performance in the board exams

While pre-boards are meant to prepare students for boards, at times it leaves some with heightened anxiety, reduced confidence and limited time for last-minute preparation

Need more preparatory leaves

The pre-boards are decided by the schools and greater the number of pre-board exams, the more is the stress. Students need to be given adequate preparatory leave for the board results to be positive, since that is the time when they can work on their grey areas and integrate what they have learnt earlier. Examinations test students on their memorisation, which is not learning. The education system needs to change, from being examination-centric to learner-centric.

A bridge to the boards

The pre-boards should be considered more as a stepping stone to the boards. It should not be the criteria for students to feel depressed or even restless about the outcome of the boards. The pre-boards should also be a time for contemplation about the areas of improvement in a particular subject. These exams can also help students engage in peer dialogue to improve upon their knowledge and skills. They are more like the semi-finals in a match and must not be a marker of the board exams. Teachers and parents should encourage and not denigrate students’ performance if they fail to meet the expectations in the pre-boards.

Keeping it flexible

There should be one compulsory pre-board exam while subsequent pre-boards should be flexible, giving students the option to exercise their choice. It is up to the students to strategise on their preparation. In many instances, students demand pre-board 2 as they want the ambience of an examination room to test their preparation. With both parents working, students feel anxious studying at home and look to their teachers as a source of comfort. Those who are stressed about exams need not subject themselves to the second round of pre-boards.

Just a mock test

The pre-boards are more like the mock tests that give the students an idea about the questions that are likely to come in the boards. The exams can help students to evaluate themselves better and brush up on the areas they need to work on. Students are reminded that the pre-boards are by no means the finals and should not be a cause for anxiety. They will have a second chance to do even better in the boards.
