When the Congress government was running in the country in the year 1975. The emergency was imposed in the country 44 years ago, which is also called the black chapter of the history of Indian politics. The emergency was declared at midnight on 25 June 1975, which lasted until 21 March 1977. During that time, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared Emergency in the country under Article 352 of the Indian Constitution on the recommendation of the government headed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
It was the most controversial chapter in the country's history. Elections were postponed during the Emergency. It is also called the most controversial phase of independent India. The next morning, on 26 June, the entire nation heard the declaration of emergency in the voice of Indira Gandhi on the radio. There are several reasons behind the Emergency, the most important of which is the decision given by the Allahabad High Court against Indira Gandhi on 12 June 1975.
Indira Gandhi can go to any extent to strangle democracy and stay on as prime minister. The opposition did not try to understand him. It is said that the foundation of the Emergency was laid on 12 June 1975 itself. On this day, the Allahabad High Court found Prime Minister Indira Gandhi guilty of misusing government machinery in Rae Bareli's election campaign and rejected her election. Not only this, but Indira was also banned from contesting elections for six years and holding any office.
The emergency took place in the country for two and a half years. The battle of Jai Prakash Narayan reached a decisive point. Indira had to leave the throne. The Janata Party was formed under the leadership of Morarji Desai. General elections were held again in 1977. In the 1977 elections, the Congress lost badly. Indira herself lost the election to Rae Bareli and the Congress was reduced to 153 seats. Morarji Desai became Prime Minister on 23 March 1977 at the age of eighty-one. It was the first non-Congress government formed thirty years after independence.
