CHENNAI: The murder case of special sub-inspector Y Wilson was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday, as officials believe that the suspects had a much larger network than expected and there was a need for expertise to apprehend all of them.
So far, police have arrested 22 suspects in the case.
An NIA official confirmed that the case had been transferred to NIA. SSI Wilson was found dead on January 8. Police arrested two prime accused, Abdul Shamim and Thoufique, from Udupi railway station on January 14.
During initial inquiries by police, the duo claimed that they killed Wilson to avenge the arrests of their leader, Khaja Moideen, and aides Syed Abdul Nawas and Abdul Samad in Delhi. The duo said they stabbed Wilson when he was alone at a police checkpost at Kaliyakavilai off Kanyakumari-Thiruvanathapuram bypass road on January 8.
Subsequently, police retrieved the guns and knives used by the duo to kill Wilson from a sewage drain in Kerala. Tamil Nadu police took the two men to Kaliyakavilai checkpost, Ratnagiri and Udupi, where they had stayed in hideouts.
In December last year, officials of the Tamil Nadu 'Q' branch had arrested Pachaiyappan, Rajesh and Liyakath Ali based on their suspicious movements and "indulging in radical activities". Police then arrested Mohamed Haneef Khan, 29, Imran Khan, 32, and Mohamed Zaid, 24, from Bengaluru. Subsequently, police arrested Al-Hind Trust coordinator Khaja Moideen, A Syed Ali Nawas, Abdul Samad, from Delhi and Jaffar Ali in Vadodara in Gujarat on January 8.
