Ambedkar Nagar state assembly constituency is located within the jurisdiction of Delhi’s South Delhi parliamentary constituency. Ambedkar Nagar will go for assembly elections in February, 2020 along with the other 69 assembly seats of Delhi as the present five year term of the Vidhan Sabha comes to an end on 22 February 2020. The total number of voters in Ambedkar Nagar seat is 139608 which consists of 76191 men, 63410 women and 7 third gender electors.

In 2015 assembly elections for Delhi Vidhan Sabha conducted in Ambedkar Nagar constituency, AAP’s Ajay Dutt won the seat defeating the BJP candidate Ashok Kumar. The votes they scored were 66632 and 24172 respectively. Earlier in 2013 assembly election polls, Ashok Kumar had secured 36239 votes representing AAP and defeated the BJP candidate Kushi Ram Chunar who scored 24569.

Right from 1993 elections, Prem Singh of INC got elected for the Delhi assembly from this seat four times in consecutive elections. In 1993 elections, his score was 19621 votes. He got 27670 votes in 1998 elections. In 2003 polls, he secured 25880 votes. In 2008, he got 30467 votes and became the MLA. In all these elections, he defeated the BJP candidates who came second in the counting of votes. While INC won in four elections and AAP won in two elections, BJP was the runner up in all the elections conducted so far in the Ambedkar Nagar assembly seat. Ambedkar Nagar is a reserved seat for SC right from the beginning when this constituency was carved out.
