NEW DELHI: The pistol used by 25-year-old Kapil Gurjar to open fire at the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest site at Shaheen Bagh was acquired by him seven years ago. Gurjar told police that he had bought it for celebratory firing during his brother's wedding and had hidden it from his parents. However, he has been evading questions about where he bought the weapon.
Police are scanning through his Facebook profile to find out whether he was influenced by someone to carry out the attack. Gurjar's profile was deleted immediately after his arrest. His family's antecedents will also be analysed.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court sent Gurjar to two-day police custody. Police will verify his claims and also from where he procured his pistol.
The officer who interrogated Gurjar told TOI that he gave evasive replies when asked where he procured the pistol from. "He remained composed during the investigation, but did not cooperate much, giving multiple replies to the same question. Looking at his conversations and body language, Gurjar does not seem to be mentally disturbed," the officer said. However, Gurjar told one of the investigators, " Apne desh mein kab tak dab ke rahenge? (For how long will we live suppressed in our country)"
Gurjar's father told police he did not know about his son's plans or that he had a pistol.
The accused said that he was not affiliated with any political party and was angry because of the traffic jams due to the protests. Police have seized his mobile phone and are scanning the call data records and WhatsApp chats.
